Tattoo Removal

The Gold-Standard in Laser Technology

At Renew Laser, we ensure only the latest laser technology is used to deliver the best possible results in tattoo removal. The Hollywood Spectra by Cynosure Lutronic is just that. The Spectra is shown to clear stubborn tattoo ink in less sessions without damaging your skin. With an ultra-short pulse and an even beam profile, tattoo ink is shattered into tiny particles and carried out by the patient’s lymphatic system. Using the most recent technology available means there is no scarring left behind. What was once a permanent symbol of self expression can be left in the past, without a trace.

How does tattoo removal work?

Tattoo removal is a process that happens over time beneath the surface of the skin. Lasers break up tattoo ink into tiny particles that are then carried away by your lymphatic system. Multiple sessions are required to fully remove a tattoo. Sessions are spaced apart by 8 weeks or more. Leaving adequate time between sessions ensures the skin heals completely, and the body has enough time to make the ink clearance happen. Patients can expect to see the ink gradually fade as sessions progress.

How many sessions will it take to remove my tattoo?

There are several factors that influence how quickly a tattoo will be removed. Things like ink colours used, location on the body, saturation and depth of the ink, age of the tattoo, and individual patient lifestyle all come into play. We can estimate how many sessions a tattoo will take to remove based on these factors, but we will not know how an individual tattoo responds until we begin the removal process. Most tattoos can be removed in 8-12 sessions.

When will I start to see results from my sessions?

Each tattoo is unique and will experience different rates of clearance. Sometimes, results can be seen after the very first session. This is more typical with shading rather than line work. Line work may start clearing immediately, or it could take three or more sessions before dramatic improvements can be seen. The tattoo will fade gradually between sessions, but the process of tattoo removal begins underneath the skin as soon as the laser interacts with your unwanted tattoo.

What is the healing process like?

The healing process differs from person to person. Most people find that the healing is similar to when they were originally tattooed. There is expected redness, and in the first couple of weeks following your session, you may experience an intense itch. It is extremely important not to pick at or scratch the tattoo directly. Some people may experience blistering, but this is typically avoided by using conservative laser settings. We begin your removal journey on a lower setting and gradually increase as the sessions progress. This ensures you do not have unwanted side effects such as scarring or hypopigmentation.

Are some colours easier to remove than others?

Yes. Black is the easiest colour to remove. This is because there is a stark contrast between the ink and the skin, so the laser easily detects the pigment. Red is usually second to black in ink clearance. The more difficult colours are green and bright blue, but at Renew, we have wavelengths for all colours. The most difficult colour to remove is yellow, due to the fact that it is so similar to the colour of your skin. White ink cannot be removed.

How is the pain?

The pain varies by a few different factors. Some locations, like the foot or the ribs, will be more sensitive and therefor more painful. Individual pain tolerance also plays a big role in how someone handles the treatment. The sensation of tattoo removal is often described like a rubber band snapping your skin. Fortunately, the sessions are incredibly fast, usually lasting only 10 seconds to a few minutes, depending on the size of your tattoo. We recommend the use of numbing cream as most people find it makes a substantial difference.
